Kennel News 11 June 2017

10th June 2017

This week it's sponsoring, new flags and volunteer workshops.......

GENERAL NEWS - As we mentioned last week, the charity has changed its name to The Greyhound Trust and we have now started to see changes to the branding. We have a new flag proudly fluttering away at the entrance to the kennels and are expecting new signs to be delivered at any time. Our Facebook and Twitter pages have had a name change (but are still easy to find) and our work in progress includes the website, new livery for our trailer, kennel team uniforms, flyers and general paperwork. Phew what a list!

We are really pleased to say that we have had an increase in kennel volunteers, for which we are really grateful as new faces are always welcome. Many of our new volunteers are staying later or doing the afternoon shift (we are now open from 9am to 4pm, 7 days a week) and the hounds love the extra company. We are always looking for new volunteers though so even if you only have a few hours a week available we would love you to join us and help with feeding, walks around the paddock, grooming (something the hounds really enjoy!) and generally socialising our beautiful hounds so they are ready to go to their forever homes. We are always looking for volunteers to attend road shows to promote the breed and you can even bring your own hound along to show what good pets they make! We offer in-house training and a buddy system to all new volunteers and there is always plenty of tea and coffee to hand (with biscuits and cake too) so why not come and join us? Email the kennels at kennels@rgtwolverhampton.co.uk if you are interested.

At any time we will have greyhounds entrusted to our care that are unsuitable for placing in homes as pets. They will live in our kennels with no fear for their future and we want them to receive the best possible care. You can help us to help them. By joining our sponsor scheme, you can help ensure the rest of their natural lives will be lived out in comfortable and pleasant surroundings, and any necessary veterinary care provided. Your financial support is vital to their future. Please take a few moments to read about them before joining our scheme and in return for your help, you will receive a sponsor pack with a free gift, photos of the dogs, a certificate and surprises through the year from your kennel pals. Your generous support is magnificent whenever we ask for it. Please consider joining our sponsor scheme which will run from April - April each year. We currently have two 'supported hounds' who are happily living in homes that are currently being supported by our sponsor scheme. Their names are Parker and Luigi and both require constant medical care which helps them to maintain a wonderful quality of life. Please consider helping our hounds! The Sponsor form can be downloaded from here.

EVENTS THIS WEEK - Baz and Dan picked up the trailer yesterday morning (a cloudy and miserable start) along with Clancy, Fraser and Jenny and set off for Rugeley Charter Fair, always a popular event and this year was no different. Despite a change of venue while a new flood defence system was installed in the field the fair usually took place in, the new venue was just as easy to find and judging by attendance on the day, hadn't put people off coming. The day brightened up, though dark clouds kept appearing periodically but luckily the rain held off - the same can't be said of the wind however, with tombola tickets being taken out of people's hands before they could open them, all found and returned, including a couple of winners! Lots of interest in the hounds we took, along with the work we do, and the hounds were all very well behaved even with all the activity going on around them, and plenty of opportunities to see how they reacted to different breeds of dogs as people came along for a day out and stopped by to say hello. As always in past years, the event was very well attended and we all had a great time doing what we love to do - chat about greyhounds and what fantastic pets they make.

This morning was The Great Global Greyhound Walk, which is a dog walking event to raise awareness and show what great pets the hounds make and takes place internationally on the same day. The branch took part by holding a walk today on Cannock Chase, meeting at the visitors centre at Brindley Heath at 10am with the walk starting at 10.30am. As usual there was a choice of two walks, a short one of one and a half miles and a longer one of two and a half miles for the more energetic hounds. Everyone enjoyed it and hopefully raised awareness of the hounds!

UPCOMING EVENTS - We are delighted to announce that we have a New Awareness Events and Roadshow Co-ordinator in the form of Steve Smith - he will be working hard to carry on the good work done by Dan in the past.

Pounds for Hounds - And still the madness continues! All the events are on the website here and there is also an online auction.

Volunteer Workshops, August 9th and 12th in Birmingham - The National Team will be hosting two workshops in August at Birmingham Dogs Home, where we would like you to come and join us. Both workshops will be identical in content, with one running on a weekday and the other a weekend. We will be sending out a link next week for an event booking page where you'll be able to secure your place for the day. The event will be a mixture of presentations and interactive sessions covering all aspects of the Trust, and an opportunity for you to feedback your ideas and challenges in a positive forum. We will be joined by the Chairman of the Trustees, Professor Steven Dean, and the Chief Executive, Lisa Morris-Tomkins, alongside the Trust's management team, and hope you will join us. More to follow soon, but for now, save the date!

Wolverhampton City Centre, 17th June 2017 - If you are in Wolverhampton City centre today, please come along to Queens Square between 8.30am and 4.00pm, where you will be able to meet our hounds. The hounds would love to see you and receive as much fuss that you want to give them. Our volunteers will be on hand to chat and tell you what great pets Greyhounds make, together with answering all your questions. On the trailer, we will have our merchandise, donated books and maybe you can also win a prize on our featured game. We look forward to meeting you.

Sounds for Hounds, 23rd June 2017 - Sounds for Hounds will again be held at the Woodfield Sports & Social Club, Woodfield Avenue, Penn. WV4 4AF from 8.00pm with a late bar, but this has proved a popular event in the past, so please be early to get a seat. This year we are making the event a little bigger, as we now have a Neil Diamond Tribute, plus the Karaoke-Disco. During the evening we will be holding an auction and raffle to raise funds for the hounds. Tickets priced at £5.00 including a buffet meal, will be available from mid May on a first come basis, either from the kennels of by contacting Terry on 07523 437626. Children are welcome under adult supervision, so join us for this fun packed family night.

Wednesfield High Street, 24th June 2017 - The trailer and hounds will be on the High Street from 9.00am till approximately 4.00pm outside the ' Cult of the Sphynx' tattoo parlour. As well as meeting the shoppers, this one of our fund raising events for 'Pounds for Hounds'. Please pop along, meet the hounds and they will proudly show you their own unique ear tattoos. We look forward to meeting you and showing what great pets greyhounds make.

Sponsor Race Night at Monmore Green, 29th June 2017 - The Monmore trainers and owners will be organising a Race Night to raise funds of part of our 'Pounds for Hounds' campaign. A Retired Greyhound will lead the parade before each race and who knows it may have been one of your favourite racing hounds. Also during the night we will be drawing our annual raffle in front of the night's patrons. You will have one last chance to buy a £1 ticket before the draw.

Don't forget that during this month only, we will be hosting a Sponsor Weekend event each weekend as part of our fund raising campaign 'Pounds for Hounds'. Nail clipping and galloping, subject to climatic conditions, available at the kennels from 10.00 am till 12.30 pm. As there is limited parking available at the kennels, please park on Hilton Park Services, which is free for two hours and walk the short distance to the kennels.
